ThreadmarksReader ModeHello to all,
as you may have heard, after 12 years of operation, Naruto-Arena decided to finally close its doors in late May 2018, and so did Soul-Arena, its Bleach-themed sister site.
Wow. Truth is, this hit me unexpectedly close to home. Not even a week ago from writing this post, I decided to check the game out for old time's sake. When I started a quick game, contrary to my expectations, it didn't take me long at all to find a match. Perhaps I just got lucky, but I found an opponent in under a minute multiple times in a row, and it was always a different person. I realized that the game was still very much playable, and even unlocked a character! ItwasYondaimeMinato, ifanyone'sinterested. I thought, 'Huh, this game may yet survive for another year or two. When I have time, I'll try to unlock Hiruzen. I forgot how much I enjoyed playing this!'
And now, not even a week later, here we are. The site that we have all spent so much time on has closed, most probably never to return. It's saddening, truly, but there is nothing we can do. It's been a long time coming, ever since the admins were locked out. But, while we're at that topic, I might do a quick FAQ regarding this shutdown.
At some point around the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016, the two main admins of the game, Kostas and Spirit_in_Black (SiB) were locked out of their admin panel as a result of hacking, thus losing all access to their administrative capabilities. This had happened once before, but they were granted their rights back by the webmaster, Gametester (GT). The second time this happened, however, GT didn't recover their access to the admin panel, and thus Kostas and SiB effectively ceased being admins.
At the time this happened, they were in the middle of a revitalization drive known as the 'optimization updates', where they would go over all the characters in the game - most of which were relics of the times of the former admins, and were, for the most part, underpowered and/or exceedingly bland - and rework them to bring them up to par with all the other characters in the game and, at the same time, bring some variety to N-A. At their height, these optimization updates were actually very successful, and for the first time in years, the active membership of Naruto-Arena saw a rising trend instead of a constant decline. It never reached the glory days of 2008-2010, but it was a rise regardless. Update version 1.3.0 was implemented on December 10, 2015, making some balance changes and adding three new characters... and at the time, nobody knew that it would be the game's last.
Of course, after the updates stopped coming, people started leaving, which left N-A in a strange, stagnant state for over two years. Nothing changed, nobody heard from GT, Kostas, or SiB, and fewer and fewer people were playing the game, which led to GT ultimately pulling the plug a few days ago.
Interestingly, just a few weeks ago, at the beginning of May, the N-A domain was renewed for two years until 2020, and S-A for one year until 2019, which could have been automatic, but could have also perhaps hinted at GT's intentions to revitalize the games somehow. Whatever they might have been, he ended up closing the sites anyway, so we may never know.
Several fanmade remake projects are in the works, Their creators occasionally post on this subreddit, so as these games develop, you'll likely find more about them right here. Just keep your eyes peeled.
